New Service Announcement: Environmental DNA (eDNA) Water Testing

Hill Labs is excited to announce the launch of our Environmental DNA (eDNA) Water Testing service. This service enables the detection of organisms in aquatic environments through the analysis of trace DNA found in water samples.

Developed by our experienced molecular biology team, led by Dr Eilidh Mowat, Dr Sara Loeffen and Dr Jibran Tahir, the method utilises established DNA extraction methods with targeted Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) assays to amplify specific genetic markers. All DNA sequencing is conducted using an Illumina MiSeq instrument, with sequence results compared to comprehensive and up to date reference databases to assign species identities.

Hill Labs' eDNA in Water service complements and extends our capabilities in the molecular DNA space - notably our earthworm eDNA service for the agricultural sector, as well as a range of rapid pathogen PCR tests and whole genome sequencing services for the food and horticulture industries, including testing for PSA, Listeria, Salmonella, and Cronobacter.

Our new eDNA test allows those working in ecology, water quality, and biosecurity to access high-quality DNA testing from a trusted local provider with over 40 years of experience in laboratory water testing. Dedicated Client Service Managers are available to support the diverse needs of our clients.

What Environmental DNA Can Tell Us About Freshwater Life

All organisms shed DNA into the environment, and by collecting DNA that has been shed into a water way and sequencing it, we can get a picture of the plants, animals, fungi and even microscopic single-celled organisms in a local area. This method is a powerful and emerging tool that allows for rapid monitoring of ecosystems and detecting environmental changes that traditional monitoring methods may miss. It offers a non-invasive way to detect which species are present in a freshwater environment - without the need for disturbing it.

Getting Started with Hill Labs eDNA Testing

Hill Labs provide water sampling kits for both single and replicate sampling, containing everything you need to sample eDNA from a water way. Easy to follow sampling instructions are also included. The standard turnaround time for results is ten working days from the date samples are received.

Further information on Hill Labs eDNA in water testing can be found on our eDNA in Water web page, along with example report files, technical notes and analysis request forms.

To order a sampling kit, or if you have any questions regarding the eDNA in water service or the sample collection process, please contact our Environmental Client Services Team at env.csm@hill-labs.co.nz.
