Taking a Closer Look at Mould Testing

Whether it's investigating a moisture issue, assessing indoor air quality, or responding to visible mould growth, reliable testing can provide valuable insight into a building's environment.

Hill Labs offers mould testing services throughout New Zealand, using recognised testing methods and experienced analysts to identify and assess mould in indoor and outdoor environments. By determining the types and levels of mould present, testing can help build a clearer understanding of potential issues and support decisions about appropriate next steps.

Behind every sample is a team of specialists dedicated to delivering reliable results. One of those experts is Senior Laboratory Technician Lani Goodman, who played a key role in expanding mould testing to Christchurch.

Technician Spotlight: Lani Goodman

Lani brings experience as a mould analyst across New Zealand and Australia. Along the way she has analysed thousands of samples and helped train others in the specialised field of mould identification.

Much of the work takes place under a microscope, where experience and attention to detail are essential.

"Non-culturable mould testing relies heavily on the experience of the analyst and their ability to identify spore types accurately and have repeatable counting parameters," says Lani.

It's a role that requires patience, technical knowledge, and a sharp eye. Experienced analysts can recognise subtle differences between spore types, from their shape and size to their texture and structure.

Lani says mould analysis is about recognising the subtle differences that make each spore type unique.

"Mould testing comes down to what we can see under the microscope.  We are trained to spot small differences between spore types, such as their shape, colour, size, texture, and branching patterns."

While many samples contain commonly encountered spores, there are still moments that break the routine.

"It's always exciting when we come across a rare spore type, or one we haven't seen in a while. They all have their own little character and quirks."

Lani says one of the strengths of Hill Labs' mould testing service is the experience shared across the wider team.

"We have a broad team of experienced analysts working across several locations. Clients can access local, convenient mould testing while still benefiting from the knowledge of a wider technical network."

Combined with support from a responsive Client Services team, the testing process is straightforward for clients, from initial enquiry through to results.

As I write this, we are finishing the clean up after a complex and high-stakes piece of work which was delivered over the weekend – an upgrade to the power supply at our largest lab, located in Hamilton. This has been months in the planning, and included a full power shut down to the site, with generators used to keep essential operations running until the power was restored.

It has been a busy and productive year for Hill Labs, with several important milestones that reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting customers with reliable, responsive and innovative laboratory services. One of the highlights has been the successful establishment of our raw milk testing service from June. As the dairy season builds, sample numbers are now picking up, and it is encouraging to see this new capability already supporting the sector.
