Introducing Dairy Commodity Product Testing and MALDI-TOF Identification

Customer needs continue to evolve - particularly across dairy commodity testing and microbiological identification - and over the past year, these topics have become increasingly common in conversations with our clients.

In response, we have expanded our laboratory scope to include ISO reference method testing for dairy commodity products, alongside the introduction of MALDI-TOF identification technology.

This expansion has been driven by customer demand for greater alignment with internationally recognised testing methods, faster identification capability, and access to deeper technical support through an existing trusted laboratory partner.

For dairy commodity producers and exporters, ISO reference methods provide confidence in globally recognised methodologies that support consistency, compliance, and market acceptance. As customer specifications and export expectations continue to evolve, access to these methods is becoming increasingly important.

At the same time, the addition of MALDI-TOF technology enhances our microbiological capability through faster and more accurate organism identification. This supports quicker investigations, improved technical insight, and more efficient decision-making when issues arise.

These additions also reflect something important about how we operate as a laboratory - staying agile and responsive to the industries we support. We continue to invest in expanding capabilities that address customer needs.

Behind the scenes, this work has involved significant collaboration from our technical teams to validate methods, strengthen expertise, and ensure these new capabilities meet quality standards.

We’re pleased to now offer these services as part of our broader testing scope and appreciate the ongoing customer feedback that continues to help shape our technical direction. If you would like more information about how these services could benefit you, please get in touch with our Client Services team at food@hill-labs.co.nz

New Analysers for Dissolved Nutrients in Water

Hill Labs processes tens of thousands of samples annually for dissolved nutrient testing. The analysis of dissolved reactive phosphorus and dissolved nitrogen species, including ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrite, and nitrate, forms a core laboratory workflow where the timely delivery of high‑quality results is essential. We recently transitioned to a new Flow Injection Analyser (FIA) platform for all dissolved nutrient testing, and we are excited to share more information on this.
