Winery Water and Wastewater

Ensure your winery meets environmental and regulatory standards with Hill Labs' water and wastewater testing tailored specifically for wine production processes.

Winery Water Testing

If you make or package wine using your own water supply, such as tank, bore, or river water, you are required under the Wine Act 2003 to test this water annually to ensure it meets the standards for clean water. Winery water testing includes

  • E. coli testing. The MPI limit is <1 per 100mL sample. E. coli may be present in shallow bore water or if the water supply is not properly secured.
  • Turbidity. The MPI limit is<5 NTU. High turbidity indicates the presence of particles, which may result from dissolved substances precipitating out (e.g., oxidised iron) or elevated organic matter.

Winery Wastewater Testing

As part of sustainable and cost-effective waste management, many wineries are turning to wastewater irrigation, using treated winery wastewater to irrigate land. This approach requires careful monitoring to ensure it does not negatively impact soil health or crop productivity. To assess whether winery wastewater is suitable for irrigation, the following tests are recommended:

  • pH – Indicates acidity or alkalinity.
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) – Measures organic matter levels.
  • Total Nitrogen & Total Phosphorus – Key nutrients that must be managed to prevent environmental runoff.
  • Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium – Affect soil structure and fertility.
  • Chloride, Manganese, Iron – Trace elements that influence plant and soil health.
  • Phosphorus & Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR) – Evaluate potential impacts on soil structure and irrigation efficiency.

Monitoring & Compliance
Before implementing wastewater irrigation, check with your local council for specific compliance requirements in your area. Regulations may vary depending on location and environmental conditions.
